7th EPBN Webinar: What’s Next? Navigating the effects of Bulgaria’s Anti-LGBTIQ+ legislation in schools.

Join us for a crucial discussion on Bulgaria’s recently passed law banning LGBTIQ+ “propaganda” in educational settings. Introduced by the far-right, pro-Russian Revival party and surprisingly supported by pro-European Union factions, this amendment to Bulgaria’s education code prohibits the “propaganda, promotion, or incitement” of LGBTIQ+ “ideas and views” in schools. Passed on August 7, 2024, the law has ignited protests across the nation and raised serious concerns about its impact on LGBTIQ+ rights, which are already considered some of the most limited within the EU.

This webinar will delve into the motivations behind the law’s passage, its practical implications, and what it specifically means for the LGBTIQ+ people in Bulgaria. How will this change the atmosphere and the already precarious situation for LGBTIQ+ rights in the country? What role can businesses and the international community play in mitigating the effects of this legislation?

Featured Speaker: Simeon Vasilev, Chairman of the GLAS Foundation, and head of Work it Out (EPBN members) and an advocate for diverse causes including LGBTIQ+ rights, environmental conservation, and social justice. Simeon brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for equality and human rights to our discussion. We’ll also be joined by Maya Peycheva Takeva, HR representative from HPE.

Discussion Points:

  • Understanding the law: What does the law entail and why was it passed?
  • Impact analysis: How will this law affect the educational and social environment for LGBTIQ+ individuals in Bulgaria?
  • Community voices: Insights from Bulgarian activists and the international response.
  • Path forward: How can businesses and global communities contribute to positive change?

Join us as we explore these critical questions with insights from Simeon Vasilev.
