The European Pride Business Network (EPBN) has in recent weeks submitted its comprehensive contribution to the new EU LGBTIQ+ Equality Strategy for 2026-2030, proposing a roadmap to advance workplace equality across Europe. The document emphasizes that a competitive Europe is an inclusive Europe, where diversity is a driver of sustainable economic performance.
EPBN’s contribution highlights the urgent need for a strategy that gives equal weight to the promotion of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) in the workplace as it does to other key issues affectin LGBTIQ+ people. This is rooted in the belief that the protection and promotion of DEI is a political and democratic responsibility that reinforces the core principles of freedom, social justice, and sustainable growth. The paper underscores that discrimination, including subtle forms like microaggressions, continues to pose obstacles to career advancement and professional wellbeing for LGBTIQ+ employees.
“We welcome the European Commission’s ongoing commitment to LGBTIQ+ rights, including the continuation of the Equality Strategy and the support for civil society through programs like CERV. But the truth is: in today’s political climate, good intentions are not enough. We need stronger mandates, binding laws, and consistent enforcement across all Member States,” adds Lucia Urcioli, EPBN Board Member.
To address these challenges, EPBN’s key proposal is the creation of a European Directive on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEID). This directive would require Member States to implement common minimum standards, obliging employers to adopt and report on concrete DEI measures, including the prevalence of microaggressions and harassment. By strengthening these efforts, Europe can position itself as a global leader in inclusion and a destination of choice for talent.
Beyond a new directive, the paper calls for a reinforced legal framework, dedicated research into AI-induced discrimination, and continued support for civil society organizations through programs like CERV. As the document concludes, EPBN’s vision is to combat and prevent discrimination of LGBTIQ+ people at work and promote their equality in the workplace and in society.
