Advocacy
Workplace inclusion does not advance on goodwill alone. It advances when the legal framework supports it.
We work directly with the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of Europe to make sure LGBTQIA+ workplace rights stay on the agenda, and that the people affected by policy have a hand in shaping it.
Turning workplace equality into European policy
Our advocacy is built on evidence from across our network and delivered through sustained engagement: consultation submissions, policy briefings, institutional visits and direct dialogue with decision-makers. We work to strengthen and extend European anti-discrimination protections, to advance diversity, equity and inclusion as a legislative priority, and to ensure enforcement matches ambition. Our members bring national realities into European institutions’ rooms. That is what makes us credible.
Key Objectives
- Secure a permanent seat where EU policy is shaped.
- Extend and strengthen anti-discrimination protections.
- Ensure enforcement matches legislative ambition.
Our Approach
- Developing policies that remove barriers to inclusion in the workplace.
- Providing training and resources to empower businesses and employees.
- Promoting sustainable and socially responsible business models.
European law already prohibits workplace discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation. In practice, only a small minority of people who experience discrimination ever report it, largely because they do not believe reporting will change anything. Closing the gap between rights on paper and rights in practice is the core of our advocacy work.
We pursue this on several fronts. We call for a European Directive on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, setting common minimum standards for Member States and clear obligations for employers, scaled by size and sector. We press for protections to be explicitly extended to gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics. And we push for sanctions that are effective, proportionate and genuinely dissuasive.
We also work on emerging risks, particularly algorithmic bias in recruitment and workforce management, where new technology can reproduce old discrimination at scale unless safeguards are built in from the start.
